In the last year and a half, 8 states have dropped their participation in the 13 year old Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC).
It’s the only interstate system that’s designed to catch voter fraud, and has been lauded by Democrats and Republicans alike for its success in maintaining election integrity.
It all started with an article published on an ultra-conservative website called the Gateway Pundit, which is known for its conspiracy theories like believing that the 2018 Parkland school shooting victims in Florida were actors.
Eventually Gateway stumbled upon ERIC and announced that it was nothing more than a George Sorsos driven, “left wing voter registration drive.” The hysteria took on a life of its own and even while knowing the claims were false, Republicans went with it in an effort to appease their base at all costs.
Election officials on both sides were horrified with one conservative elections attorney saying, “this is going to cause voter fraud to flourish."
What’s interesting is that if actual voter fraud is discovered in the 2024 election, Republicans can say, “See, I told you so!” while not admitting that they were the ones who destroyed one of the only tools designed to keep elections fair.
Perhaps this is the intent.
