One of the cruelest acts of Congress in recent years was to not extend the Child Tax Credit that was provided for in Biden’s American Rescue Plan of 2021.
The measure immediately lifted more than 2 million children out of poverty, but it was temporary, and ended at the end of that year because Republicans, along with Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, refused to extend the credit.
So now those kids are right back where they started with not enough resources, including food, to provide a quality life that most of us enjoy.
Manchin said that parents would use the $300/month that was afforded each child during the program to buy drugs, although survey’s showed that the vast majority of the money went to food, housing, and other essentials.
When confronted with the findings by the U.S. Census Bureau yesterday that the poverty rate had doubled as a result of the tax credit’s expiration, Manchin replied, "the federal government can't run everything.”
Meanwhile the net worth of the top 32 Republican members of Congress, including Manchin, exceeds $2 billion.
