There’s far too much machismo in politics. In fact, I think we would be better off if the country was run by women, or at the very least, if half of the elected and appointed officials were women. Having more of a maternal instinct in our government would be a good thing.
Since the dawn of man, males have largely been the hunters and gatherers - the ones who clubbed or threw rocks at animals for food, and then of course, the ones who killed each other over territory. Chest beating has been a thing forever.
And it continues. Our leaders are made up of mostly men with too much testosterone. Threats, bombs, and bullets are their preferred way of settling disputes rather than through the use of carrots.
Now we have a man who has a shot at being president again who was a notorious bully in high school, who’s been accused of sexual assault by 26 women, who has been infatuated with combat sports for decades, who’s constituency is overwhelmingly young and male, who drips with retribution, and recently shared a video of himself saying, “If you f**k around with us, if you do something bad to us, we are going to do things to you that have never been done before.”
Although former President, George H.W. Bush didn’t necessarily behave that way, I still long for the “kinder” and “gentler” approach to governing he advocated in his Inauguration speech of 1989....but I guess that’s just wishful thinking.
