A lot of people nowadays are not running for office to help facilitate much needed change by making laws that the vast majority of the electorate supports, but rather they seek office for fame and fortune. They become actors and the more flames they throw, the more popular they become.
The media loves blood, guts, and gore because that's where they make their money. Sadly the electorate is complicit - we eat that stuff up and can't get enough of it.
Then once people catch on and realize those gold diggers aren't really representing us at all, they get thrown out off office after which they go off and either get a cushy job with one of the media organizations they helped promote, or on K Street where they make millions as lobbyists.
This is what the United States Congress has become.
