YOU CAN'T READ THIS....5/25/23

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

Book banning in this country has been around since the Puritans censored Thomas Morton’s, “New English Canaan” in 1637 because it criticized the rulers' customs and power structures.

Almost 400 years later, Florida governor and presidential aspirant, Ron DeSantis has made banning books a centerpiece of his campaign with no fewer than 565 titles removed from school shelves last year.

The latest literary composition to succumb to the hysteria in the Sunshine State is Amanda Gorman’s, “The Hill We Climb”, the poem she read during President Biden’s inauguration in January of 2021. The National Youth Poet Laureate’s poem brought tears to the eyes of millions with her message of empowerment.

In it she wrote, “We, the successors of a country, and a time where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president, only to find herself reciting for one.”

That hope for thousands of young people in Florida and elsewhere is being challenged now more than ever before.
