Ramzi bin al-Shibh is one of 30 prisoners still held at the United States military prison in Guantánamo Bay at a cost of $13 million per prisoner per year. Most have never been charged with a crime.
Al-Shibh has been confined for 21 years and is one of those who was finally scheduled to go on trial for his alleged involvement in the 9/11 attacks, but this week a medical panel said his mental illness disqualified him from undergoing the proceedings.
It’s no surprise - he along with most of the other inmates at the infamous detention facility have been repeatedly tortured by the CIA.
Guantánamo is a travesty, but it’s out-of-sight and out-of-mind for most Americans so Congress does nothing.
Incidentally, these 30 prisoners are supported by a staff of around 6,000 people, which includes a McDonald's restaurant, and with American taxpayers footing the bill.
