22 years ago this morning I received a call from my daughter from Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island where she had spent the summer working. Her words are still seared in my mind, "Dad, what's happening?"
The billowing smoke from the terrorist attacks was clearly visible across the water 130 miles away.
I was watching the events unfold on my office computer when she called. I told her that life would never be the same, and that they should leave the area as quickly as possible. She and her partner had planned to move to New York after the season ended.
What happened was that terrorism came home to the United States that day and was subsequently fueled by the unjustified war in Iraq, which claimed close to a million Iraqi lives according to some estimates.
It's now here to stay.
