The Endangered Species Act was signed into law in 1973 by Richard Nixon and since then the measure has saved over 1,600 species from extinction.
Then the Trump administration came along and changed some of the rules governing the act, which made it easier for developers to ignore threatened plants and animals.
President Biden is now moving to restore many of those protections.
Herein lies an age old controversy.
On one side is industry charged with making money at all costs, along with those who believe that God put natural resources here on Earth for humans to use up. They think that “end times” are approaching and that it makes no difference anyway what we exploit.
On the other side are those of us who believe that our planet ought to be protected and that everything possible should be done to ensure the viability of those resources into perpetuity.
Scientists estimate that over 99% of all species that have lived on Earth are extinct with a million more in peril.
Shouldn’t we be doing all we can to save what’s left?
