The “Alliance Defending Freedom” has been labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an extremist hate group.
Yet earlier this month, 3 attorneys representing Southwest Airlines were ordered by a Texas judge appointed by Donald Trump to attend 8 hours each of “religious liberty training” from what he called this “esteemed non-profit organization”.
The case originated when a flight attendant was fired after she sent confrontational anti-abortion messages to her union management. The reasons for her termination went far deeper, but the woman successfully argued before the judge that her religious freedoms were compromised.
ADF has long been engaged in various right wing causes. It supports re-criminalization of sexual acts between consenting LGBTQ adults, defends sterilization of trans people, believes that LGBTQ people are prone to engage in pedophilia, and argues that the “homosexual agenda” will destroy Christianity.…among other things.
Senator Josh Hawley’s wife Erin, is one of the ADF lawyers who helped overturn Roe v. Wade and then subsequently sued to have the abortion drug mifepristone banned.
As an aside, Senator Hawley was captured in a photo during the January 6th insurrection raising his fist in solidarity with the anarchists, but then later was filmed running for his life away from the mob.
