Over 40 million people receive food aid each year through the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Many Republicans hate these programs and have worked for years to reduce the amount of food given to poor people.
23 percent of the money spent by SNAP recipients is for sugary drinks, desserts, and salty snacks.
But rather than curtailing those purchases, Republicans are going after their fruits and vegetables.
Currently the monthly benefit for these food groups is $25 per month for 1 to 4 year olds but they want to cut this allotment by 56% to $11 next year.
For pregnant and postpartum women, they’re aiming to take away 70% of these benefits from $44 to $13.
Finally breastfeeding mothers would lose 69% of their healthy food - a reduction from $49 to $15 per month.
Meanwhile obesity is an epidemic, partiularly among the poor, and costs taxpayers around $200 billion per year.
